How To Cope With Job Transitions & Retrenchments
Just this week, I was made aware of 4 senior employees in various companies who were recently retrenched. One minute they had a job and the next minute they didn’t. As you may know or can imagine, it is a shocking experience especially when it is unexpected. And they are only a few of the devastating casualties of the pandemic virus which has affected everyone worldwide.
Job transitions can be stressful, whether they’re due to retrenchments, a new job or working extra hours because other employees were laid off. If you are facing a loss of a job or if you are under extreme stress at work, my wish for you is that the 10 tips below will offer you support , guidance and strength and direction.
- Step up your self-care. Major changes are physically and emotionally taxing. You need self-care now more than ever.
- Consider options. Is this the time to start up the business that you have been putting on the back-burner? Your hand is being forced now; this just may be that perfect time for you. Two of the 4 people I mentioned in the opening paragraph immediately started their own business and already have clients and have more orders than they could have ever imagined in 1 or 2 short weeks.
- Focus on what you want, and less on what you don’t want. Keep your eye on the prize.
- Find support. A transition affects everyone. It affects not only you, but your family as well. It may be best to seek the outside support of trusted friends & peers or better still, professionals who have the expertise to provide you with unbiased insight, support and perspective.
- Work on your mindset. Calm your fears and reinforce your sense of hope and possibilities. For myself, taking action is my best antidote for fear.
- Surround yourself with the right kinds of people. Get reassurance from people who believe in you. Avoid naysayers and those who are threatened by, or are even jealous of, the change.
- Create a new routine. Routine, ceremony and ritual all help with all transitions. This tool has gotten me through some of the darkest times of my life.
- Let go of how things were “supposed to be” and accept “how things are.”
- Ask for ideas, help and support. There is strength in community.
- Keep things in perspective. Or try on a new perspective. Don’t get stuck. Remember, the only constant is change.
If you have made the decision to start your business and need support. Here is a great offer for my ‘Start Your Business in 2020’ course starting 22nd June.
